T4rdis2 Tour 2 - Day 54 - 58 Czech Republic, Austria and Germany

Day 54
Tuesday 23rd August 2016 - a mostly sunny and hot day.

John and I spent today cycling on our own on some of the many miles of lovely, but slightly hilly bike trails that criss cross the Lipno Lake area. We both agreed,  having already visited Lake Constance in Germany,  (a place that  is quite famous for it’s cycle ways), that this part of the Czech Republic wins hands down - especially if biking is up your street!

We left the house and headed for  Dolni Vltavice, where we planned to catch a ferry to cross back over the water to complete a circular ride.  However,  as the first half of the ride (about 19 miles) contained all the hills it was quite hard work, and at one point I couldn’t quite figure out why we did this for fun!

But when we paused for coffee by a little pond, and had the pleasure of watching fish leaping for insects and swallows skimming the water’s surface while trying to catch their lunch, the simple pleasures in life became quite clear.

And this was reinforced by the magnificent vistas that revealed themselves as we neared the lake, where we had to endure the ‘hardship’ of waiting about half an hour for boat to come in

While we waited we had time to learn form the information boards that the lake is man made and forms the largest body of water in the Czech Republic, covering 48,700 square kilometres, and thus earning the title of The South Bohemian Sea.
Interestingly it only has an average depth of 6.5 metres but it holds the vast amount of 306 million cubic metres.  Now my maths is slightly lacking, but with all of the above info, even I can work out that it must be a very long way all around, so with that in mind, I think we’ve shelved the possible plan to cycle all the way!

Once we’d crossed over on the ferry we had about another 15 miles to ride, but with another little rest it really was a very enjoyable ride.

Day 55
Wednesday 24th August 2016 - The weather is still behaving very well and treating us to sunshine for most of the time.

Well, today was almost an exact replica of yesterday except for 2 facets! Firstly Sharon Paul and Ben came with us, and secondly I had a very big helping hand that made me zoom up the hills and enabled me to fly past all the others as if jet propelled!  I’d hired an electric bike (just 22 quid for the day) and it was absolutely wonderful - no more huffing, puffing or sweating on the hills and John and I had great fun racing and chasing on the way home.

Later we found our way down into the village of Fyrmbuk where we stumbled across a splendid little watering hole where we shared a lovely meal for a bargain basement price -  5 main courses, 4 puds, drinks for all and an extra drop of whisky for John - just about £65 all in!

Day 56
Thursday 25th August 2016 - Hot and sunny again

Another quite day at home for us - T4rdis2 got scrubbed inside and out, and everything in site was washed and dried.  We spent time lazing in the garden, and we even briefly considered where we might go next.  We’re thinking maybe Saxony (in Germany), and hopefully our itinerary will include Dresden, Leipzig and Sachsische Schweiz - The Saxon Switzerland where we're hoping we'll be able to visit the Lusatian Mountains.

Day 57
Friday 26th August 2016 - Absolutely boiling again!

Today needed to be a good one because it was our last full one with Sharon, Paul and Ben - so to be sure we all enjoyed it to the full we had sneaked into the hire shop again and secured E-bikes for us girls and an electric scooter for Ben.  Now, you may ask ‘ what about our boys’ - John and Paul choose to be brave and go under their own steam and on their own bikes, thus facing the challenge of keeping up with the electro brigade (which they did extremely well), and as an added disadvantage, they had to carry all the food and drink to keep us going all day.

Our other major consideration was where to go, but seeing as we had all enjoyed our ride so much the day before we opted to repeat it but with a little extra excursion into Austria added on - we were aiming for a full day out.

So, first things first, and down to the hire shop we went to be kitted out with our shiny electro steeds.  Then we were off up the several long hills that form the first part of our ride, and all at a much faster pace that we had done previously - there were a couple of hot sweaty bodies in our party but it wasn’t me or Sharon.

Once again we paused at the ferry stop for lunch in the baking sun, and then it was over the water, and from there we attacked the extra loop of our ride which took us very briefly over the border into Austria.

This turned out to be Sharon and Paul’s favourite bit as we found ourselves riding over quite gravelled tracks through tall pine woods.

When the extra loop was complete we found ourselves back on a familiar track and we enjoyed a second break beside the lake, before  continuing back towards Lipno.

Ben under push power from his Dad and John!
However, it was on this leg of our journey that we encountered 2 small mishaps - Ben’s scooter battery ran out and Sharon’s left peddle got stuck resulting in her only being able to peddle her bike with her right leg - it was a good job her battery was assisting.

Happily, the problems were quickly resolved because we were only a couple of kilometres  from Lipno where the hire shop had a second business, so we all had our fingers crossed they would resolve things for us.  But to get there Ben needed a push and Sharon worked hard at developing the muscles on her right leg!

Then it didn’t take much longer (even with an ice cream stop) to get back home where we had the sad job of packing up all our belongings ready for our departure in the morning.

Day 58
Saturday 27th August 2016 - Another scorcher 32 degrees, outside and 36 in T4rdis2

This morning brought a quick scurry round gathering up and packing all our belongings, and then a tearful good byes as we went our separate ways. Sharon, Paul and Ben have gone off for a couple of days in Prague before facing their very long drive home, and John and I have returned to Passau just over the border into Germany.

So, what do we think of the Czech Republic?  When Sharon and Paul suggested it as a holiday venue, we had some reservations as to if we would like it and if there would be enough to do!  However, it far surpassed all our expectations and we couldn’t have asked for a more perfect place to spend our ‘holiday’  To say it’s bike friendly would be an understatement - just about everybody rides and it wasn’t unusual to see tots of 3 or 4 riding along side their parents, or people in their 70s or 80s roaming along the tracks. Therefore, we would have to say, that if you want a cheap holiday in a beautiful place with lots to do, and with very friendly mostly English speaking nationals this would maybe be the place for you. It certainly was right for us, and I'm sure, that sometime in the near future, we'll find our way back.

And finally, we would like to say a very big Thankyou to Sharon and Paul for arranging it and for making our time there such a fantastic experience - but we’re missing you loads already xxx

Tardis 2 Tour 2 Day 48 - 53 Czech Republic and Austria

Day 48
Wednesday 17th August 2016 - A warm sunny day

Today all our bikes were loaded onto Paul’s car, then we all piled in and off we went for a ride in the forest beside The Schwarzenberg Timber floating Canal. We headed for Stozec where we knew multiple cycle tracks were available, but for our ride we mostly peddled up gently rising slopes or on flat tracks that followed the canal bed for a good part of the way.  Work started on it in 1735 but it’s total  52 kilometre length wasn’t completed until 1804 as sections kept being added, one of the most interesting being the ‘Horni Portal’ - a 419 metre tunnel that that goes through the Plesivec Hill!

The canal is quite dainty, being only 2.5 metres wide and 1 metre deep but an amazing 8 million cubic metres of timber were transported by this route to various destinations including Vienna during a hundred year period. And even after that, although the hey-day had passed, it’s use continued to a lesser extent until as recently as 1962.   Sadly, it is now quite derelict but for us it  still proved  a lovely tranquil riding place that was far from the madding crowds, thus enabling us to ride side  by side and natter as we went.

And of course, we were probably only about half way through our 25 mile ride when we all decided we were hungry, so a sharp lookout was kept for a picnic spot.  Our first option was a pile of logs at the side of the trail, but faces were pulled when we noted numerous crawly things that resided there - so I looked in my ‘crystal ball’ and reassured everyone that there would be a better place a little further on (there nearly always is)!  So we carried on a little further, and low and behold, my perfect place materialised - however, maybe Sharon didn’t agree cos she has quite an aversion to butterflies of which there were plenty!

Once fed and watered we continued on our way, but only to be interrupted by an untimely puncture, where while it was being fixed the insects managed their own picnic, so once we were back on our bikes it was full steam ahead to outrun them.

Day 49
Thursday 18th August 2016

Today our destination was Cesky Krumlov - another UNESCO World Heritage site that is only about 15 miles form our base. Specifically, we wanted to see it’s historical centre and explore it’s shopping opportunities, as well as hopefully spotting the brown bears, generations of which have lived in the castle moat since 1707.

Once parked we toddled up to the castle which was started in the 14th century and added to many times over the next 3.  It and it’s beautiful tower sit high up on a narrow rocky promontory above the River Vltava, but of the many castles we’ve seen on our travels, this one at first seemed quite strange!

The outer walls of all the buildings and the tower are painted with Fresco's - but even the bricks were painted on giving them  a 3 dimensional effect.

Another Cheddar Man
I'm not sure how you pour your tea from this!

We walked up though it’s 5 court yards, pausing in one to visit the cellars where we found some bizarre sculptures - I think the Artist was trying to demonstrate  the effects that Czech repression during the war had on him - but it was all quite deep even though the explanatory plaques were in English!

We continued our journey through the castle grounds and it eventually topped out in a very well manicured 11 acre garden which was complete with water features and a special wooden platform.   One of the guides explained that it had been installed especially for Asian people to stand on to take their photos - he said it was because they were to small to see properly without it’s aid!

Later we walked though the old cobbled streets of the town where we found numerous touristy shops selling all manner of goods and goodies in the effort to get visitors to part with their money.  However, the medieval character was well preserved within  the winding labyrinth of cobbled streets, and once you entered the buildings many of them were like dark cellars with their goods displayed on little ledges.

After our browsing we finished off our visit with a very pleasant drink down by the river, and then it was time for a quick trip to Lidl and Tesco to replenish our fodder for the rest of the holiday.  Eventually we managed to acquire a trolley full of goodies but deciphering some of the labels was quite a challenge - it’s a good job we’d got Google Translate on our side!

Day 50
Friday 19th August 2016 - A bit cloudy at times but with plenty of sunny intervals.

Today Sharon, Paul and Ben have gone out on their own so they will have to tell us about their adventure when they get back, but John and I have  stopped at home to have a ‘rest day’!  We’ve scrubbed and polished T4rdis2, we’ve caught up with our washing and John has serviced our bikes - hopefully stopping mine from making a horrible clicking noise!

So really, I’ve got nothing much to add, but it’s nice to be lazy sometimes!

Day 51
Saturday 20th August 2016 - Hot and Sunny

The Watch Tower on a High Hill

Today we packed our picnic, saddled up our bikes and headed for the ferry to take us across the lake to Frydava.

From there we picked up another quiet cycle route that took us, first along by the lake side, and then up, up, up and evermore up to a watchtower  high on a hill called Zricenina Vitkuv Hradek!

It was only an old ruin but there was a gentleman wandering around in authentic costume telling us something in Czech, music playing from deep in the bowels of the ancient building and a very nice little cafe from where cool drinks could be purchased.
So all in all, it was a lovely place to pause for lunch - poor Ben even got crucified!

Then the payback for all the up hill was a very long Woooooosh down to within a few yards of the Austrian border, but a visit there wasn’t on the cards today, instead we turned back towards the lake and Predni Vyton where we came across another part of the Lipno sports facility.

Here people could try out various sports equipments, so while we supped a cool cider Ben played on a Segway.  Then, having spent our ferry fare on booze we were forced to remount and peddle the last few miles home - about 30 in total.

Day 52
Sunday 21st August 2016 - Rain - and lots of it overnight then cloudy and a bit showery in the day.

Because of the weather it was really not a day for cycling, so we decided to do a bit of cultural sight seeing instead.  We all jumped in Paul’s car and headed for the city of Linz - a place found on a bend of the Danube just over the Austrian border.   However, what we hadn’t bargained on was all the shops being closed (it was Sunday), maybe a good thing cos  window shopping is much cheaper!

So as we walked along one of the main streets, drooling over what we were being deprived off, and we hadn’t really got any plan as to what we were going to do, but our problem was solved when we entered one of the many churches.

It just happened to be The Church of the Ursuline Sister’s - a place where over 400 angels are displayed, and a 360 degree light system is available to illuminate them individually along with an explanation of their origin.
Another Cheddar Man

It was here that a person of great knowledge explained that there was a roof top exhibition called ‘Hohen Rausch’ that was all about Angels.  She said it would take us about an hour and half to explore (a vast under estimation), and she provided a map in English that gave us a bit more information.  We all agreed that, as we couldn’t spend our money any other way, this would be a good way to pass our time and see much more of the city form a birds eye view!

So, with map in hand off we set, in and out, and up and down numerous roof top pathways and buildings to explore the 30 odd exhibits.  They provided various artists’ interpretations on the theme of angels displaying such things as grand pianos with wings that could be flapped by pulling on a rope (much like ringing a bell); a ‘back to the future’ where photos of the same individual had been take with a 20 year gap; a ‘flying fox’ where you could be hoisted up on a wire and ‘fly’ over the streets on a slow zip wire;  an area of musical instruments call ‘The Arched Harp’ where you could make noises but not music!; and that’s to name but a very few!

We also found a tower ‘Orf Musikprotokoll im Steirischen Herbst’ which we climbed and that was supposed to represent ‘a stairway to heaven’.

We didn’t quite find that, but as we stood on it’s swaying top we did have magnificent 360 degree views in every direction of the city of Linz which is very well endowed with numerous churches - one of the most magnificent being it’s Cathedral.

In all the display took us about 4 hours to explore, so by the time we reached ground level again we were a bit foot sore and in need of rejuvenation so coffee was a prerequisite while we rested our weary legs in a little park area.  However, John thought the ones we  picked up a McDonalds were the worst he has ever tasted, so lesson learnt, and we’ll stick to our flask in future!

Then we set off back to the car, crossing over the Danube as we went and discussing our dinner options.

In the end we landed in a roadside fish restaurant were we consumed delicious barbecued mackerel and enjoyed another black beer before continuing on our way home.

Day 53
Monday 22nd August 2016 - a bit cloudy and overcast but with good sunny periods.

John and I have opted for another day off today - we’re going to potter around doing odd jobs, and then later we’ll go for a little walk down to the lake and maybe enjoy Pizza for lunch.

Sharon, Paul and Ben have gone off out on their bikes with the possible plan of going tobogganing!

I’m sure we’ll all meet up later for another evening of good food and maybe a game or two of cards, and the time will fly by because we’re sharing it  with our very dear friends.

So once again, bye for now and take care x

T4rdis2 Tour 2 - Day 42 - 47 Germany and Czech Republic

Day 42
Thursday 11th August 2016 - Heavy rain overnight, then cloudy for most of the day but with heavy rain storm in the afternoon.

Today was a bad day - well everybody has them!  We’d planned to visit Berchtesgadener Land to see Lake Konigssee - Germany’s highest lake at 2000 feet above sea level, and then travel on to The Eagle’s Nest.  The Eagle’s Nest was Adholf Hitler’s favourite residence and it stands high up on the summit of Kehistein, and to get there you have to traverse a scenic mountain road which passes through five tunnels - a drive that I think John was quite looking forward to. However, despite his very best efforts and 2 attempts at parking (we went away for an hour for lunch and then came back for a second go), we were thwarted and had to leave without seeing anything
Burghausen Castle

This, along with a generous dose of home sickness, lowered my spirits and made me quite miserable, but my ever loving travelling partner managed to rally them by providing tea, a shoulder to cry on, and then magically finding us a new destination that provided much of interest.  T4rdis2 landed at Burghausen!

The town is situated on the River Salzach, and towering over it is the 13th century Gothic Burghausen Castle - the world’s longest castle which stretches for over 3,450 feet!  It has six separate court yards that provide a long promenade through which you can wonder and learn about the buildings history from multi-lingual information boards, as well as marvelling at the views from the high castle wall.

The town is also famous as a venue for Jazz, and a whole street is dedicated to many famous musicians with bronze plaques embedded along it’s length to immortalise their memory. Additionally, there were also numerous shops selling all sorts of musical memorabilia - old records, instruments and even ones with motor bikes in their windows!

Day 43
Friday 12th August 2016 - And it’s still raining!

This morning we were really at a bit of a loss as to what to do - we only have one more day in Germany before crossing over into the Czech Republic to spend 2 weeks in a house with our friends Sharon, Paul and Benjamin.  We’d considered going to an area of forest called Bayerischer Wald which stretches north to the River Danube and lies between Regensburg and Passau, and getting our bikes out - but  the bad weather put us off.   So instead we settled on driving to the town of Passau which lies on a peninsula between the Rivers Danube and Inn, and luckily John had found a free Stellplatze just a short distance from the old town and right on the banks of the Danube.

Unfortunately, we did have about a mile to walk to get into the town properly and most of it was along busy road, but eventually we were able to drop down onto the river side where we found several huge ‘pleasure crafts’ (wouldn’t be for us) that cruise along this mighty water way.  From here we pottered to the tip of the peninsula to see where the Danube and Inn meet, and then up through the cobbled shop lined lanes of the old town.

And it was here that we found our main attraction for today - Dom St Stephen or St Stephan’s Cathedral.

From the outside it is a breathtaking Baroque masterpiece which was built by an Italian architect called Carlo Lurago to replace the original Gothic structure which was largely destroyed by fire in the 17th Century.

However, once we were inside I can truly say I have no words to describe it’s intricate beauty and magnificence, it was absolutely jaw dropping in the artistry that filled every available space - and they even had proper wooden pews!

After that we wandered a bit more through the lovely streets of Passau, but more rain was threatening to fall, so in the end we hurried home, and once again just avoided a dousing.

Day 44
Saturday 13th August 2016  - Warm and sunny

Today was the day that we were heading over the Czech border to meet up with our friends Sharon Paul and Ben, but before we went we nipped into Aldi and Netto and collected a shipping order of shopping to keep us going for the next few days - beer and wine being top of our list.

Then it was forwards and onwards to Frymburk and to our holiday accommodation, where T4rdis2 become firmly entrenched for the next 2 weeks.  And then later in the evening it was time for a really lovely reunion, which was managed with no tears.  Our evening was spent guzzling a drop of bubbly and indulging in a few edible treats, along with a bit of planning as to what we will do for the next few days.

Day 45
Sunday 14th August 2016 -  Hot and sunny

A lazy day really.  We walked down to the lake and generally nosed around checking out the lie of the land.  We investigated the local feeding stations and shops, we walked beside the lake (dodging the zillions of bikes as we went), and we ended up at a local ‘park’ where Ben and Paul had a go on some special adult sized tricycles - they hauled them up to the top of a hill using ski lifts and then they let rip coming down - it must have been good fun cos Ben had 5 goes and Paul 2.

Then it was time for a lovely cool beer by the lake ( 6 quid for 3 pints and 2 soft drinks), and then a bit more investigating as to how we are going to amuse ourselves over the next few days.

Day 46

Monday 15th August 2016 - Hot and Sunny

Today we got our bikes out for a ride around part of the lake.  In total it’s about 60 miles all the way around so we knew we wouldn’t quite manage that, and in the end, we only did about 15 miles because we kept finding distractions along the way!

After a photo call at the house we were very quickly on the track heading towards Lipno, and as at the moment the Czech’s are holding their own Olympic events that  almost rival the real thing, there was plenty to see and do.   I think just about all the events (ball games, water sports, raquet games and equestrian) are included with both adults and numerous children taking part, and as well as that there are companies demonstrating their wares along the way.

So when we came to the ‘Specialized’  bike stand our boys were truly delighted.  We managed to bag a picnic table nearby so we parked our bums for  a long lunch and our male contingent all nipped off for  goes on both the cross country and obstacle courses.  And to add to the fun Ben and Paul were able to borrow ‘posh and expensive’ bikes that they wouldn’t usually be able to use.

Eventually, we managed to pry them away and we headed further around the circumference of the lake, but we didn’t go much further before we came to a ‘little ferry’ terminal from where we crossed back over the water and indulged in another cooling pint which was made all the more delicious because of it’s bargain basement price.

Later we returned to the house for tea, and then entertained ourselves with card games and gossip all accompanied by a cheeky G&T (or 2)

Day 47
Tuesday 16th August 2016 - a sunny day but with a bit of cloud cover

Yesterday we had very briefly passed through the village of Lipno where the main Olympic events are taking place, so this morning we decided to go back and investigate further. However before we did that we visited Stezka Korunami Stromu - a 675 metre long treetop path that leads to a 40 metre high observation tower.

And even getting there was exciting because we took the 1 kilometre long cable car ride up the hill and soared amongst the fir trees tops with occasional jolts that caused  adrenaline surges when the cable suddenly stopped resulting in  the chairs swaying quite alarmingly. Additionally, mounting and dismounting was something of an ‘art form’ that we hadn’t all completely mastered, thus when we got off it was a little less than dignified but quite funny!

As we walked up the path towards the tower we also found what are referred to as ‘adventure stops’ along the way - mostly balance obstacles with nets under them - but you could see a very long way down - however, it was necessary for us all to have a go even though they were probably only meant for the kids!

Once we actually reached the tower we toddled up the circular walkway right to the top, and from there the views were quite breathtaking!  It was a very clear day so we could easily see all of the Lipno area and the lake, but further afield we could spot the Sumava Mountains, the Novohradske mountains and all the way to the Alps.

And to get down from the tower the choice was either to retrace our steps in a slow and sedate manner  or to opt for the steep 52 meter long dry toboggan run that coils down the middle of the tower - the grown ups walked but Ben went the fast way!

Then it was a return journey on the chair lift, with just as many adrenaline jolts as coming up, and back to the car for a very late picnic lunch.  But our day was far from finished yet - it was now time to explore the ‘Olympic Village’ where entrance and all the attractions were free.  Ben leaped form a tall tower into an air bag, he cycled on a virtual reality cycle simulator (and beat his opponent)  and he had a go at baseball - me and John - we just watched with a nice cool drink, but I would have to say the facilities and entertainment were fantastic!

Finally, our day was finished off with a very nice meal at a local cafe, and really we were quite lucky because the menu was all in Czech, but we did manage to decipher enough to all get what we wanted. Then it was back to the house for a good sleep before we embark to tomorrows adventure.

So that's all for now x
